Peter Hook um dos fundadores de duas lendas da música mundial, o Joy Division e o New Order, está a caminho do Brasil onde toca no dia 4 de outubro no Cine Joia em São Paulo. Nesta entrevista exclusiva para o Portal A Ilha do Metal ele nos conta sobre o início de sua carreira, alguns momentos das turnês no Brasil e as possíveis surpresa do Show em São Paulo.

A ILHA DO METAL-) Primeiramente gostaria que Peter Hook se apresentasse ao público brasileiro, todos te conhecem pela sua historia junto ao Joy Division e o New Order, mas gostaria de que contasse um pouco da sua história antes do Joy Division, enfim, como surgiu o músico Peter Hook?

Peter Hook-) Bem, eu nasci em Salford que é uma cidade que fica ao lado de Manchester, na Inglaterra. Passei parte da minha infância na Jamaica, meu pai conseguiu um novo emprego por lá e toda a família foi com ele por alguns anos. Foi uma experiência incrível. Eu comecei na música, porque eu vi um show em Manchester dos Sex Pistols e foi incrível, um verdadeiro momento na história, e no dia seguinte eu e meu amigo decidimos formar uma banda, apesar da gente não saber tocar nenhum instrumento! Fui à cidade e comprei meu primeiro baixo e começamos nossa banda, que iria se transformar em Joy Division e o New Order. Assim, os Sex Pistols são, obviamente, uma influência enorme para mim, assim como o The Clash e The Stranglers.

A ILHA DO METAL-) Lembro de sua primeira passagem no Brasil com o New Order na qual você, sem seguranças saiu no meio da galera para comprar algumas camistesas daquela turnê, você se lembra disso e como foi aquela sensação? E o que lembra de suas passagens pelo Brasil?  Lembro da foto do primeiro show de você com uma bandeira de caveira que segundo a imprensa da época era uma homenagem ao Sex Pistols.

 Peter Hook-) Sim, eu queria ter algumas das camisetas para a minha coleção! Gosto de colecionar tudo, eu sempre fui interessado nesse tipo de coisa. Para mim, não tem problema andar por aí, gosto de manter contato com as pessoas o tempo todo. Ir para o Brasil pela primeira vez foi muito emocionante. O público é fantástico, definitivamente um dos melhores públicos do mundo, por isso é sempre um sentimento muito bom o de poder ir para o Brasil. E sim, eu suponho que era o meu pequeno tributo pessoal aos Sex Pistols, pois como eu disse anteriormente, eles são uma influência enorme na minha vida.

A ILHA DO METAL-) você participou do documentário “Lemmy: 49% motherfucker. 51% son of a bicth”, Qual a importância de Lemmy e do Motorhead para você? Aqui no Brasil no inicio dos anos 90 usualmente existia uma grande distancia entre os fãs de Joy Division/ New Order com fãs do estilo Motorhead/Sex Pistols, essa situação existia também na Europa? Já que tudo é música e todo estilo musical sempre é bem vindo.  Hoje ambas as bandas são consideradas “cults” e todos apreciam, importando apenas a qualidade da música.O que pensa a respeito?

Peter Hook-) Lemmy é uma das pessoas mais importantes na indústria da música na minha opinião. Ele é uma verdadeira lenda e vive para a música. Está ficando mais velho, mas ele ainda toca ao vivo, porque ele gosta. Eu realmente respeito muito isso nele. Foi ótimo para ser convidado a participar do filme de Lemmy, porque ele é realmente uma lenda da música. Eu amo Motorhead mesmo não sendo muito parecida com a minha música que fiz com Joy Division e New Order. Meu filho também é um grande fã de Motorhead e Hawkwind, (outra banda de Lemmy). Eu acho que sempre haverá diferentes estilos de música que competem uns com os outros por um público, mas na minha opinião a melhor maneira de fazer isso é se aproximar de todos os estilos musicais com uma mente aberta, eu gosto de pensar que tenho um gosto musical muito grande e variado.

A ILHA DO METAL-) Você é conhecido como o baixista que inverteu a função do baixo na música popular, ou seja em suas músicas quase sempre o baixo é que se torna o instrumento solo e as guitarras e os teclados é que fazem a base (ex: Regret; Krafty; Love Will Tear Us Apart) de onde veio a inspiração para reinventar essa função ? E seu baixo elétrico o ECCLESHALL virou a sua marca registrada! Por que você escolheu esse baixo?

Peter Hook-) Bem, quando começamos a banda nosso equipamento era muito ruim, e durante os ensaios eu não conseguia me ouvir tocar a menos que eu tocasse as notas mais altas do baixo, eu só conseguia ouvir essas notas! O meu amplificador era muito ruim e não pegava nenhuma nota mais grave. Então, desenvolver esse estilo foi um pequeno acidente eu suponho! Nos ensaios do Joy Division, Ian ouvia essas notas mais altas e dizia que soava bem, então eu continuei com esse estilo , também no New Order, embora no New Order meu estilo era muito mais melódico. Meu baixo é feito a mão com o corpo oco feito pelo luthier por Chris Eccleshall – Pedi a ele para me fazer um baixo, porque eu não consegui encontrar um que era perfeito para mim, então eu tive que dar jeito! Eu gosto de tocar com o meu Yamaha também, mas meu baixo feitio a mão me dá o melhor som.

A ILHA DO METAL-) Sobre seu passado com suas bandas, você recomendaria algum cover de suas bandas? (Eu gosto muito da versão de Orgy para Blue Monday). Você lembra de alguma?

Peter Hook-) A versão de Orgy de Blue Monday é boa. Mas a que eu gosto mesmo é a versão de Dead Souls do Nine Inch Nails, eu sou um grande fã de Trent e companhia. Eu também adoro a versão de Temptation do Moby, porque ele realmente a mudou bastante, e para mim isso é o que faz um bom cover, o fato de acrescentar algo novo a versão original.

 A ILHA DO METAL-) E o Supergrupo “Freebass” (banda inglesa formada, originalmente, por três baixistas, Peter Hook, Andy Rourke (The Smiths), & Gary “Mani” Mounfield (The Stone Roses e Primal Scream),  com vocalista Gary Briggs (Haven). De onde veio a ideia de formar um grupo com 3 baixistas e apenas um vocalista, você ainda fala com esses caras?

 Peter Hook-) A ideia aconteceu porque todos os 3 de nós estávamos muito frustrados com os vocalistas de nossas bandas normais, que não estavam afim de tocar ao vivo em qualquer lugar! Então decidimos formar nossa própria banda para se livrar desse problema. No papel, foi uma grande ideia, mas na verdade acabou sendo bastante difícil, estávamos todos tão ocupados com os outros projetos que não conseguimos dedicar tempo suficiente para torná-lo tão bom quanto poderia ter sido. Tocamos alguns shows ao vivo, mas não estava funcionando, então decidimos sair enquanto estávamos no topo. Eu ainda falo com todos e sempre seremos bons amigos, disso eu estou certo.

A ILHA DO METAL-) Essa é a primeira vez que o Peter Hook & The Lights dedica uma turnê a tocar somente as músicas do New Order, visto que o projeto foi criado com o intuito de prestar um tributo ao Joy Division, por que só agora vocês resolveram tocar New Order?

Peter Hook-) Sim, esta é será a primeira turnê que iremos tocar os dois primeiros álbuns New Order. Nós começamos a tocar o material do Joy Division em 2010, para prestar homenagem ao Ian Curtis pois fazia 30 anos que ele havia nos deixado. A Ideia inicial era de se fazer apenas um show, mas fomos convidados para fazê-lo em todo o mundo, inclusive no Brasil em 2011. Nós acabamos tocando todas as músicas do Joy Division já escritas ao vivo mais uma vez, o que eu acho que é uma grande conquista. Todos rapazes da banda fizeram um ótimo trabalho. Portanto, agora que tocamos tudo o que o Joy Division já fez, tocar os dois primeiros álbuns New Order ao vivo é apenas o próximo passo mais lógico a ser dado neste projeto, e também irá nos levar de volta ao Brasil, em Outubro (4 de outubro no Cine Joia, INFORMAÇÕES) algo que está me deixando realmente ansioso.

A ILHA DO METAL-) Gostaria que você definisse a música das bandas e suas performances ao vivo ou seja qual comparação você faz do Joy Division, New Order, Monaco e agora sua carreira solo? E podemos esperar algo do Monaco no Set List?

 Peter Hook-) Bem, o Joy Division era basicamente uma banda punk no começo que depois evoluiu para uma banda de rock. New Order começou como uma banda de rock, mas depois evoluiu para uma banda eletrônica – é tudo muito confuso! Mas eu estou muito orgulhoso de tudo o que fizemos com essas bandas. Mônaco foi um grande momento, eu realmente gostava de fazer os álbuns do Mônaco, tinha muito da música pop e também da música eletrônica nessa banda. É engraçado que você me perguntar sobre o Mônaco, porque nesta tour temos na guitarra David Potts meu antigo parceiro musical de Mônaco! Então, quem sabe talvez pudéssemos tocar uma música Mônaco, em São Paulo, talvez algo como ” ‘What Do You Want From Me‘, vamos ver o que acontece! Nós temos uma grande surpresa planejada com a banda de abertura. Nós tocaremos músicas do New Order no show principal, mas vou te dizer que, se você quiser ouvir Joy Division também, chegue cedo para assistir a banda de abertura, haverá uma grande surpresa!

 Peter Hook one of the founders of two musical legends, Joy Division and New Order,  is coming to Brazil where  he plays on October, 4h at Cine Joia in Sao Paulo. In this exclusive interview for A Ilha do Metal website; Peter Hook told us about the beginning of his career, moments from touring in Brazil and possible surprises that can happen in Sao Paulo’s gig.

 A ILHA DO METAL-) First of all, I would like you introduce yourself to the Brazilian public , everyone knows you from your carrier with Joy Division and New Order, but we would like to know the history before Joy Division, how Peter Hook started in music, your personal influences, something about this.

Peter Hook-) Well I was born in Salford which is a city just next to Manchester in the UK. I spent part of my childhood growing up in Jamaica though in the Caribbean – my father got a new job over there and the whole family went over with him for a few years. It was an amazing experience. I started in music because I saw a gig in Manchester by the Sex Pistols and it was amazing, a real moment in history, and the next day me & my friend decided to form a band, even though we could not play any instruments! I went to town and bought my first bass guitar and we started our band, which would turn into Joy Division and then New Order. So the Sex Pistols are obviously a massive influence for me as well as other bands like the Clash and the Stranglers.

A ILHA DO METAL-) I remember your first gig here in Brazil with New Order, if I’m right, you, with no security guards, walked in the middle of the crowd to buy some T-shirts of that Tour, do you remember this, how did you feel about that situation, and about your first tour in Brazil?  I remember that in that gig you wave a flag with a skull, the local press said that act was a tribute to Sex Pistols . Is this true?

Peter Hook-) Yes, I wanted to get some of the t-shirts for my collection! I like to collect everything, I have always been interested in that. To me it feels fine to walk around, I like to keep in touch with the people all of the time. Going to Brazil for the first time was very exciting. The audiences in Brazil are fantastic, definitely one of the best audiences in the world, so it is always a great feeling to come to Brazil. And yes I suppose it was my own little Sex Pistols tribute, like I said earlier they are a massive influence on my life.

A ILHA DO METAL-) You made part in documentary ” Lemmy : 49 % motherfucker . 51 % son of a bitch,” What is the importance of Lemmy for you? Here in Brazil in the early ’90s there was a huge distance between the Joy Division/New Order audience of the Motorhead / Sex Pistols audience, this situation also existed in Europe? And today both bands are considered ‘cults’ and everybody enjoy all songs, what you think about that fans that enjoy music despite of the style and labels?

Peter Hook-) Lemmy is one of the most important people in the whole music industry in my opinion. He is a real legend and he lives for music. He is getting older but he is still playing live because he loves it. I really respect that about him. It was great to be asked to take part in the Lemmy film because he is a real music legend. I love Motorhead even though it may not be very similar to my own music with Joy Division or New Order. My son is also a big fan of Motorhead and Hawkwind, Lemmy’s other band. I think there will always be different styles of music competing with each other for an audience but I think the best way to do it is to approach all styles of music with an open mind, I like to think that I have a very big musical taste.

A ILHA DO METAL-) You are known as the bassist who reinvented the way of play bass in popular music, in your music you almost always chooses to play high notes on bass, because of that, it seens that the bass sounds like a solo instrument and not a basic instrument leaving this function to the guitars and keyboards (ex:Regret , Krafty ; Love Will Tear Us Apart, Disorder ) where did the idea of writing bass lines in that way come from? And talk about your electric bass Eccleshall, that became your trademark, Why did you choose this instrument?

Peter Hook-) Well when we started the band our equipment was very poor, and when we were practising it meant that I could not hear myself playing unless I played very high notes on the guitar, I could only hear those notes because my amp was so bad. So developing that style was a bit of an accident I suppose! At Joy Division rehearsals Ian would listen to the high notes and say that it sounded good, so I carried on doing it and then also did it with New Order although in that band my style was a lot more melodic. My bass is a custom made hollow body guitar by Chris Eccleshall – I asked him to make me a guitar because I could not really find one that was perfect for me so I had to make it myself! I like to play Yamaha bass guitars too but my custom bass gives me the best sound.

A ILHA DO METAL-) About your past with Joy Division and New Order , Do you recommend some cover from your  bands? (I really like the version from Orgy for Blue Monday) Do you remember any?

Peter Hook-) Orgy’s version of Blue Monday is good. I really like the version of Dead Souls by Nine Inch Nails, I am a big fan of them. I also really loved the version of Temptation by Moby because he really changed it and to me that is what makes a good cover the fact that something new is added to the original.

A ILHA DO METAL-) About the Supergroup “Freebass” ( English band formed originally by three bassists Peter Hook ( Joy Division and New Order ), Andy Rourke ( The Smiths ) & Gary ” Mani ” Mounfield ( The Stone Roses and Primal Scream ), and singer Gary Briggs ( Haven ) . Where did the idea to form a group with 3 bassists and only a vocalist come from? Do you still talk with these guys?

Peter Hook-) The idea happened because all 3 of us were very frustrated with the singers of our normal bands, because they would not play any live concerts! So we decided to form our own band to get rid of that problem. On paper it was a great idea but it actually turned out to be quite difficult, we were all so busy with other projects that we could not dedicate enough time to the project to make it as good as it could have been. We played a few live shows but it was not working so we decided to quit while we were ahead. I still speak to them all and we will stay good friends forever I am sure.

A ILHA DO METAL-) This is the first time that Peter Hook & The Lights dedicated a tour only to play New Order material, since the project was created with the goal to pay tribute to Joy Division, why only now you decided to play New Order stuff ?

Peter Hook-) Yes this is the first tour where we will be playing the first two New Order albums. We started playing Joy Division material in 2010 to pay tribute to Ian Curtis our lead singer because it had been 30 years since he left us. It was only supposed to be one gig but we were asked to come and do it all over the world and we even came to Brazil in 2011. We ended up playing every single Joy Division song ever written live once again which I think is a great achievement. The lads in the band all did a great job with that. So now that we have played everything by Joy Division, playing the first two New Order albums live is just the next logical step in the journey of this project, and it brings us back to Brazil in October which I am really looking forward to.

A ILHA DO METAL-) I would like you to define music and live performances from your latest bands (Joy Division , New Order , Monaco). Did you see some difference among this bands? And your audience here in Brazil could wait some special song on the set list on October 4, 2013?, Maybe some music from Monaco in Set ? Could be?

Peter Hook-) Well Joy Division was basically a punk band at first which then developed into a rock band. New Order began as a rock band but then developed into an electronic band – it’s all very confusing! But I am very proud of everything we did with those bands. Monaco was a great time, I really enjoyed making the Monaco albums, quite like pop music but also electronica too. It’s funny that you ask about Monaco because in this tour we have on guitar Mr David Potts my old music partner from Monaco! So who knows maybe we could definitely play a Monaco song in Sao Paulo maybe something like ‘What Do You Want From Me’, let’s see what happens! We have a very big surprise planned with the support act. We are playing New Order songs in the main show, but I will tell you that if you want to hear Joy Division too then people should arrive early to check out the support act, there will be a great surprise!
