Entrevista P.O.D – Payable on Death com Sonny Sandoval

 Prestes a desembarcar no Brasil  para uma série de shows, onde intercalará os shows no Brasil com uma passagem pelo Peru, o site A Ilha do Metal conseguiu uma entrevista exclusiva com Sonny Sandoval, vocalista do P.O.D, onde comenta sobre o Brasil, o novo disco acústico e sua última passagem pelo nosso país.

 

 A Ilha do Metal- ) A primeira pergunta é quase uma clássica, como a banda começou, como foi a escolha do nome POD – Payable on Death, e qual é o significado real?

Sonny ) Payable On Death é um termo bancário. O que quer que uma pessoa deixa para trás depois que ela faz a passagem é considerada “a pagar por morte.” e relacionamos esse termo para a nossa fé. Jesus Cristo morreu na cruz, pagando o preço pelos nossos pecados. Através de sua morte temos vida.

A Ilha do Metal- ) Você se considera uma banda de White Metal? E como você vê isso um monte de rótulos em Heavy Metal?

Sonny ) Nós não somos uma banda de metal, e nunca fomos. Nós sempre nos vemos como uma banda mais de hardcore / punk do que metal. Nós misturamos muitos estilos diferentes que devem ser considerados apenas metal. Nós tocamos um monte de música pesada, e automaticamente nos colocam como essa “mistura metal”.

A Ilha do Metal- ) As letras P.O.D`s. são muito positivas, mas os vídeos costumam ter cenas de violência, por que esse contraste?

Sonny ) Eu nunca vi isso dessa maneira, os vídeos são apenas uma outra expressão artística. Esse visual é muito poderoso e sempre queremos contar uma história através da música com um vídeo. Vivemos em um mundo muito sombrio, e optamos em ser positivos.

A Ilha do Metal- )  Sobre o seu novo lançamento, Acoustic Album, como foram as gravaçôes e como criar as músicas em formato acústico? O álbum estará à venda aqui no Brasil?

Sonny )Ainda estamos terminando tudo. Nós só queríamos fazer isso por diversão. Fomos convidados a tocar um monte de shows acústicos para vários fãs vencedores de concursos de rádio e realmente transformamos nossas velhas canções neste formato  acústico. Nem todas as nossas músicas podem traduzir-se em versões acústicas, mas é divertido tentar. Nós gravamos clássicas canções do P.O.D. e também fizemos duas novas.

A Ilha do Metal- )  A banda veio ao Brasil há alguns meses e agora virão poucos dias antes de lançar um  novo CD, como o P.O.D. está preparando este set list e o que você acha que vai ser diferente do último show no Carioca Club?

Sonny ) Esperemos lançá-lo antes de irmos. Somos sempre o P.O.D, nós fizemos  umas jam com Jason Truby onde tocamos algumas faixas dos álbuns “Payable On Death” e do  “Testify”.  Nós também poderemos estar tocando uma música nova ainda que estará no próximo álbum.

A Ilha do Metal- ) Sobre Tours, o que você acha que mudou na indústria da música ao longo destes anos e com esse novo cenário qual a importância das turnês hoje?

Sonny ) Tudo mudou. A música não é a mesma. Eu sinto como se a música tivesse perdido sua paixão. Ninguém mais compra registros dos verdadeiros artistas que escrevem, gravam e vivem a sua própria música. Digo dos artistas de verdade, se você não excursiona você não come. Temos trabalhado duro por 22 anos e você acha que seria capaz de excursionar menos nos dias de hoje, mas é exatamente o oposto. Parece que as bandas permanecem fiéis ao  fãs e muitos estão esquecendo ( a música). Bandas já não são mais os definidores de tendências. Muitas bandas fazem qualquer coisa para vender um disco.

A Ilha do Metal- )  POD começou quando todos os fãs compravam muitos CD `s e LP` s, o que você recomendaria para uma banda nova que está começando e como esta mudança, a partir de LP`s para streaming, afetou a carreira do P.O.D. ?

Sonny ) Há um milhão de bandas hoje em dia. A tecnologia tornou todo mundo um músico. Há tantos pontos de venda para obter a sua música lá fora. Há boas e más repercussões sobre isso. É mais difícil para as bandas já estabelecidas que trabalharam tão duro para chegar onde  essas bandas ruins saturam o mercado com sua música medíocre. Fãs se tornaram apenas consumidores à espera de sua próxima dose a cada 60 segundos.

A Ilha do Metal- ) The first question is almost a classic question, how the band started and how was the choice of the name POD – Payable on Death and what the real meaning?

Sonny ) Payable On Death is a banking term. Whatever a person leaves behind after they pass away is considered “payable on death.” We related that term to our Faith. Jesus Christ died on the cross paying the price for our sins. Through His death we have Life.

A Ilha do Metal- ) Do you consider an White Metal band? And how you see this a lot of labels in Heavy Metal?

Sonny ) We’re not a metal band, never have been. We’ve always been more of a hardcore/punk band than metal. We mix to many different flavors and styles to be considered just metal. We play a lot of heavy music so we automatically get thrown into the metal mix.

A Ilha do Metal- ) P.O.D`s lyrics. are very positive, are very positive, but the videos usually have scenes of violence, why this contrast?

Sonny ) I’ve never seen it that way. Videos are just another artistic expression. Visual is very powerful and we always want to tell a story through music and video. We live in a dark world but choose to be positive.

A Ilha do Metal- ) About your new release, Acoustic Album, how was the recording sessions and how create the songs in acoustic format? The album will be for sale here in Brazil?

Sonny ) We’re still finishing it up. We just wanted to do it for fun. We were asked to play a lot of acoustic shows for radio contest winners and we really enjoyed transforming old songs into acoustic. Not all of our songs can translate into acoustic versions but it’s fun to try. We’ve recorded classic P.O.D. songs and are writing 2 new ones.

A Ilha do Metal- ) The band came to Brazil a few months ago and now will come days before releasing new CD, how P.O.D are preparing this set list and what do you think will be different from the last show at Carioca Club?

Sonny ) Hopefully it will release before we go. We’re always P.O.D. We’ve been jamming songs during the Jason Truby days off the “Payable On Death” and “Testify records. We might also be jamming a new unrecorded song from future record.

A Ilha do Metal- ) About Tours, what do you think has change at the music industry in these years and with new scenario what the importance of a musicians has some endorsement today?

Sonny )Everything has changed. Music is not the same. I feel as if music has lost it’s passion. Nobody buys records any more from the true artists that write, record and live their own music. For real bands, if you don’t tour you don’t eat. We’ve been working hard for 22 years and you’d think we’d be able to tour less these days but it’s just the opposite. It seems as if the bands that stay true to who they are get overlooked. Bands are no longer the trend setters. These bands have and will become whoever you want them to be to sell a record.

A Ilha do Metal- ) P.O.D started when all fans bought many CD `s and LP` s, What you recommend for a new band that is starting and how this change, from LP`s to streaming, affect P.O.D. carreir?

Sonny ) There are a million bands out today. Technology has made everyone a musician. There are so many outlets to get your music out there. There are good and bad repercussions. It’s harder for the established bands who have worked so hard to get where there at when all these bands saturate the market with mediocre music. Fans have just become consumers waiting for their next fix every 60 seconds.
